I can't quite believe I'm saying this but...
...on April 24th 2016, I will be running the Virgin Money London Marathon, courtesy of Lucozade Sport. Yes, seriously: me, running!
I feel incredibly privileged and absolutely terrified: I've had almost constant butterflies since I was asked at the end of January. Those of you reading this who know me will be well aware that I've never been a great - or enthusiastic - runner. 200m sprints followed by cleans and burpees - fine; 26.2 miles followed by a probably entourage of blisters - not so much.
All that changed, however, when I was offered a VMLM place by Lucozade Sport. I am never one to turn down a challenge or an opportunity, and certainly not one as life-enhancing as this. It came at a good time, too: my base fitness was up, and I'd even been adding a few 5km runs per week into my training. My partner Tom had also just suffered a bereavement that really knocked us sideways. Taking on a challenge of this magnitude seemed like a constructive outlet for grief, and a reminder to make the most of every moment and every opportunity life throws at you, just as Tom's grandpa had done. So despite having never run further than about 4 miles, I said a big, resounding YES.
Over the next 8 weeks until Race Day, you can follow my Couch-to-5k-to-marathon journey here on my blog, on SportStylist.com, and on Twitter and Instagram @denvertronix. I'll cover everything from food, fuel and running shoes, to the mentality and emotion of endurance running, and why running fast isn't always a good idea (weird I know, but true).
You can ask me questions, tell me I'm crazy (you won't be the first, trust me!), cheer me on or share your own experience of running or life-changing sport. Just comment below or over on Facebook. I look forward to hearing your stories and to sharing mine with you.
42,195 metres: bring it on!
